Casio CTK-7000 Keyboard repair
- 1 minMy main tool for making music is my piano keyboard
And the most important part of that is that it plugs into my computer. I remember the day that I realized a piano could plug into a computer. I was very young and didn’t even really know what you could do with it, but I remember being very excited for no reason. Nevermind that we did not have a keyboard at home. I knew one day that I’d want to have a piano that plugged into a computer lol.
My Casio was the first keyboard I owned and I’ve had it for many years. So when the MIDI functionality stopped working I was very sad. I’ve tried other keyboards but am just too familiar with my Casio. In addition the keyboard still does everything it is supposed, just doesn’t plug into a computer, so it wouldn’t be great to throw it away, although donating it would have been an option. But for sentimental reasons I needed to fix it.
Replacing the midi port
This isn’t the first time I’ve tried to fix something broken rather than buying something new. We won’t speak about the propane grill I got off of Craigslist and tried to fix up this past year.
But in this case the fix ended up being pretty simple. The USB port just turned out to be very loose. I was able to order a spare part online. From there it was just a matter of desoldering the old part and soldering the new part on. A great video to use for reference was this one: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqIwvRVRybY).
I had some trouble with the soldering iron tip not applying the heat correctly, but switching a bunch of tips was able to find one that got the job done.
Ended up very happy. It is always great to fix something broken rather than having to replace it with something new.
