Hi! I’m Dario Macieira Mitchell

I'm a software engineer and data scientist with two main interests:

The first of these comes from my belief that data is power, and that its power should serve the interests of the public. Too often (and one could argue systematically) data science is used to centralize power among institutions who are not answerable to any of the methods and rituals of public debate and democracy. If left unchecked the result will be a world of increased social and economic inequality.

The second comes from my interest in human-computer interaction. The potential of computational narratives lies in its interactivity, which allows for greater immersion and possibility for those interacting with it. I pursue this interest by utilizing both artifical intelligence as well as classical procedural techniques.

Both of these interests come together in a variety of projects spanning art and interactive design, data visualization and modeling, as well as in writing non-fiction, and writing code.

I’ve worked as a consultant for a variety of clients such as the US State Department, the ACLU, Partners for the Americas, Priorities USA, the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, and many electoral campaigns such as the Biden for President campaign. Most recently I worked at a startup called Retina AI.

I studied History and Statistics at the New College of Florida, taking a B.A. with Honors, graduating before the right-wing takeover. I am deeply indebted to my professors and advisors from my time there.
